Breast Asymmetry
Personalized correction of differences in size, shape, and position between breasts.
What is Breast Asymmetry?
Breast asymmetry is a notable difference in size, shape, position, or projection between both breasts. While some degree of asymmetry is normal in all women, when the difference is significant it can cause aesthetic discomfort, difficulty finding proper clothing, and affect self-esteem.
Asymmetry may present as volume difference (one breast larger than the other), different degrees of sagging (ptosis), unequal nipple-areola complex position, or a combination of factors.
Causes of Asymmetry
- Development: Natural differences during pubertal growth
- Hormonal: Changes during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or menopause
- Congenital: Poland syndrome, unilateral breast hypoplasia
- Post-surgical: Sequelae from previous breast surgeries or mastectomy
- Weight loss: Asymmetric changes after significant weight loss
Treatment Options
Dr. Geldres designs a personalized surgical plan that may include:
- Different-sized or profiled implants to equalize volume
- Augmenting the smaller breast with an implant or autologous fat
- Reducing or lifting the larger breast
- Combining techniques for optimal symmetry
- Correcting nipple-areola complex position
Planning includes detailed measurements and, in many cases, 3D simulation so the patient can visualize expected results before surgery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it normal to have different sized breasts?
Yes, mild asymmetry is completely normal and occurs in the vast majority of women. It is considered an aesthetic concern when the difference is notable (more than one cup size) and causes discomfort or affects quality of life.
How is breast asymmetry corrected?
The approach depends on each case. The smaller breast can be augmented with an implant, the larger one reduced, different-sized implants combined, or fat transfer used. Dr. Geldres designs a personalized plan for each patient.
Are the results permanent?
Surgical results are long-lasting. However, factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight changes, or natural aging may affect symmetry over time.
Can asymmetry be corrected without implants?
In some cases yes, through fat transfer (injection of the patient's own fat) to the smaller breast, or reduction/lift of the larger breast. Dr. Geldres will evaluate the best option based on your anatomy.
