What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) is a surgical procedure that increases breast volume and improves shape using high-quality cohesive silicone gel implants. When breast sagging (ptosis) is present, it can be combined with a lift to reposition the breast in a more youthful position.

Dr. Geldres carefully selects the implant type, size, and profile together with each patient, using 3D simulation to visualize results before surgery.

Ideal Candidates

This procedure is suitable for women who wish to:

  • Increase breast volume proportionally
  • Correct asymmetry between breasts
  • Restore volume lost after pregnancy or weight loss
  • Improve breast projection and shape
  • Correct breast sagging (ptosis)

The Procedure

Surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Dr. Geldres primarily uses the inframammary or periareolar approach, placing the implant in a subfascial or submuscular plane based on the patient's anatomy.

Internationally recognized cohesive silicone gel implants are used, ensuring safety and predictable outcomes.

Recovery

After surgery, a special compression bra is worn for 4-6 weeks. Daily activities can be resumed in 5-7 days, and physical exercise after 4-6 weeks. Final results are seen at 3-6 months, once the implants settle into their permanent position.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do breast implants last?

Modern cohesive gel implants have an extended lifespan. Periodic ultrasound check-ups every 10-15 years are recommended to verify their integrity, though replacement is not always necessary.

Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?

Yes, in most cases breastfeeding ability is not affected, especially when the inframammary or axillary approach is used and the implant is placed in a submuscular plane.

What type of implant is best for me?

The choice depends on your anatomy, existing breast tissue, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals. During your consultation, Dr. Geldres will evaluate the best options regarding cohesive gel type, shape (round or anatomical), size, and profile.

Does breast augmentation interfere with mammograms?

No. Current mammography techniques allow proper evaluation of breast tissue in patients with implants. It is important to inform the radiologist about the presence of implants.
