What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes localized fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise. Dr. Geldres employs VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) technology, which uses ultrasound to emulsify fat before extraction, enabling greater precision and less tissue trauma.

High-definition (HD) liposculpture goes a step further by defining and contouring the underlying musculature to achieve an athletic, sculpted body shape.

Ideal Candidates

Liposuction is recommended for individuals who:

  • Are close to their ideal weight with localized fat deposits
  • Have good skin elasticity
  • Want to define areas such as abdomen, flanks, back, thighs, or arms
  • Seek a more harmonious and defined silhouette

It is important to understand that liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss but a complement for body contouring.

The Procedure

Surgery takes 2 to 4 hours depending on the number of areas treated. It is performed under general anesthesia or sedation. Through small 3-4 mm incisions, the VASER cannula selectively emulsifies fat while preserving blood vessels and nerves.

Extracted fat can be processed and transferred to other body areas such as buttocks or breasts if desired (fat transfer).

Recovery

A compression garment is worn for 4-6 weeks. Daily activities can be resumed within 5-7 days. Swelling gradually subsides over the first 4-6 weeks. Definitive results are visible between 3 and 6 months after surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does fat come back after liposuction?

Removed fat cells do not return. However, remaining cells can enlarge with significant weight gain. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key to preserving long-term results.

What is the difference between liposuction and liposculpture?

Liposuction focuses on removing localized fat, while HD liposculpture goes further by defining and contouring the underlying musculature, creating an athletic, sculpted silhouette through selective removal of both superficial and deep fat layers.

How much weight can I lose with liposuction?

Liposuction is not a weight loss treatment. Typically 2 to 5 liters of fat are removed depending on the case. The goal is to reshape the body contour, not reduce scale weight.

Can liposuction be combined with other procedures?

Yes. It is very common to combine liposuction with tummy tuck, buttock augmentation via fat transfer, or breast augmentation to achieve comprehensive results in a single surgery.
