What is Abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is a surgery that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and repairs weakened or separated abdominal wall muscles (diastasis recti). It is especially effective for restoring a flat, firm abdomen after pregnancy or significant weight loss.

Dr. Geldres performs both full and mini abdominoplasties, selecting the most appropriate technique based on each patient's needs to minimize scarring and optimize results.

Ideal Candidates

Abdominoplasty is recommended for individuals who have:

  • Excess abdominal skin after pregnancy or weight loss
  • Diastasis recti (separation of abdominal muscles)
  • Abdominal laxity unresponsive to exercise
  • Stretch marks concentrated in the lower abdomen

Patients are advised to complete family planning before undergoing this procedure.

The Procedure

Surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes 2 to 4 hours. A low horizontal incision is made, hidden beneath the bikini line. Dr. Geldres tightens the abdominal muscles, removes excess skin, and repositions the navel if necessary.

It is frequently combined with flank liposuction to achieve a comprehensive abdominal contour and a more defined waistline.

Recovery

An abdominal binder is worn for 4-6 weeks. The first few days require relative rest, and daily activities are gradually resumed after 2 weeks. Exercise resumes between 6 and 8 weeks. Final results are visible 3 to 6 months after surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a tummy tuck leave a visible scar?

The incision is placed in the lower abdomen, hidden beneath the bikini line or underwear. With proper care, the scar fades significantly over time and becomes barely noticeable.

Can I get pregnant after a tummy tuck?

Yes, a subsequent pregnancy is possible and safe. However, it is recommended to complete family planning before surgery, as a later pregnancy may compromise the results achieved.

Can a tummy tuck be combined with liposuction?

Yes, this is a very common combination. Flank and lower back liposuction complements the tummy tuck for a comprehensive body contour with a more defined waistline.

How long do I need to wear the compression garment?

The compression garment is worn for 4-6 weeks, 24 hours a day initially. From the third week onward, it can be gradually removed for short periods.
